On Wednesday 6th May 2026, Irene and I were delighted to represent AIMS at the Buckingham Palace Garden Party, having been invited in recognition of AIMS receiving the King's Award for Voluntary Service.
As we walked from Victoria station down Buckingham Palace Road, we encountered a growing number of people in their finery also on their way to the palace. Military personnel in uniform, clergy, nurses, people in national dress — including several kilts — morning suits and top hats were all present. All segments of society were represented.
The gates opened at 3 p.m. and around 8,000 people thronged into the garden behind the palace. A band was playing, colourful Yeoman of the Guard (Beefeaters) and Gentlemen-at-Arms (bodyguards) were in attendance, and the gardens looked resplendent. The gardens are enormous — 42 acres — containing a lake and island.
We collected our tea at 3:30 pm from a large marquee. It included the famous crustless cucumber sandwich and several other fine pieces. At 4 p.m., the National Anthem announced the arrival of members of the Royal Family, including King Charles and Queen Camilla, Princess Anne and Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh. They mingled with the attendees until 5 p.m., when they had tea in the Royal Tea Tent. They departed at 5:30 pm.
Irene and I had a good nosey around the impressive gardens and left about 6pm. We had a celebratory glass of wine at Fortnum and Mason's to round off a wonderful day. It was a privilege to attend as representatives of AIMS, and a day we won't forget.
